A Tesla is assessed for KASKO (comprehensive motor own-damage cover) on the same basic criteria as any other car: price, deductibles, the repair procedure, roadside assistance and courtesy car terms. In addition, check which repairer the car may be taken to, what deductible applies to the windscreen and the panoramic roof glass, and whether the charging cable is covered.

Short answer:
  1. You compare Tesla KASKO the same way as for any other car: premium, deductibles, the repair and service procedure, roadside assistance, courtesy car.
  2. In addition, find out which repairer the car will be taken to and how the repair location is agreed.
  3. For glazing, what matters most is the windscreen and panoramic roof deductible and cover for calibration.
  4. Compare all the terms together, not just the premium – the cheapest quote is not always the worst one.

What to check in addition with a Tesla

Insuring a Tesla or any other electric car follows the same KASKO principles as any car. A few details differ, and they can affect repair costs and the process, so they are worth attention in the quote:

  • Cameras and driver assistance systems. If the windscreen is replaced, they may need calibration – check whether the policy covers it.
  • Glazing, including the panoramic roof. A large glass area; what matters is how the policy classifies it and which deductible it applies.
  • Service network and parts availability. The official Tesla service network in the Baltics is limited (see below), so the repair and transport procedure is a question worth clarifying.

These factors point to the policy terms a Tesla owner should check more carefully.

Where a Tesla will be repaired after a KASKO claim

Not every Tesla glass, body or collision repair has to be carried out at an official Tesla service centre. What matters is that the repair is agreed with the insurer, meets the policy terms and is carried out by a repairer suited to that particular damage. With a Tesla it is worth separating several options:

  • Tesla Service Center – the official Tesla service centre;
  • Tesla Approved Body Shop – a Tesla-approved body and collision repair shop;
  • the insurer's partner repairer – not always an electric car specialist, but it may be fully competent for that particular repair;
  • another agreed body repair or electric car repair specialist.

The situation in the Baltics (the official Tesla location list, checked 21 July 2026): only Supercharger charging points are listed for Latvia – there is no official Tesla Service Center in Latvia. The nearest official locations are Tesla Vilnius (J. Tiškevičiaus g. 26, Vilnius) and locations in Estonia. At the same time, independent repairers that work on Teslas do operate in Latvia, so the claim "there is no Tesla service in Latvia" is inaccurate without that distinction. The map changes – check the current Tesla location list before you take out a policy.

The actual repair location is agreed during the claims process after an accident – so the quote or the policy must set out a clear procedure for choosing the repairer.

Will KASKO take a Tesla to a repairer in Lithuania or another country

This is where a Tesla owner should read the policy wording carefully. In the quote or the policy, establish:

  • Whether the car is taken to the nearest repairer or to a repairer agreed with the customer
  • Whether cross-border transport is allowed and to which countries
  • What the distance or monetary limit is per event
  • Whether storage of the car and its return after the repair are covered
  • Whether assistance must first be agreed with the insurer (a recovery you arrange yourself without approval may not be reimbursed)

Important: the phrase "recovery to the nearest repairer" does not in itself guarantee transport to a Tesla Service Center of the customer's choosing. If the assistance limit or the intended destination does not cover the chosen repairer, part of the transport cost may be left with the customer – so establish the destination and the limit before the recovery.

Safety during transport: after a collision the high-voltage system can be dangerous, so a Tesla must be transported in line with the manufacturer's instructions – normally on a flatbed with all four wheels raised. The binding procedure is in the owner's manual for the particular model: Model 3, Model Y.

Does the Tesla warranty pay for transport to a service centre

Warranty repair and a KASKO accident have to be kept apart: a warranty defect in itself is not a KASKO event. For a Tesla warranty or technical problem, assistance must be requested through the Tesla app, and the type of assistance available, the destination and the costs depend on the Tesla terms in force in the region concerned.

Transport may be provided by Tesla assistance or by a separate KASKO assistance service; the actual cover has to be checked in the relevant terms. Do not assume that any warranty case automatically includes free transport out of Latvia – before the car is moved, obtain written confirmation of the destination and of who pays the cost.

Windscreen and panoramic roof glass

If the glazing is damaged, check what the policy includes in the term "glazing" and what deductible applies to the windscreen and the panoramic roof glass. They may carry different deductibles. If the windscreen is replaced, also check cover for the cost of calibrating the cameras and driver assistance systems.

  • What counts as glazing under the policy
  • The windscreen deductible
  • The panoramic roof glass deductible
  • The cost of camera calibration

Charging cable, adapters and Wall Connector

Cover for charging equipment varies between quotes more than it seems. Keep these separate:

  • the portable charging cable kept in the car – theft and damage;
  • connectors and adapters;
  • a permanently installed Tesla Wall Connector;
  • damage to public charging equipment or liability questions.

Depending on the insurance programme, a Tesla Wall Connector and other permanently installed charging equipment may be included in an electric car KASKO extension or insured as part of a building, home or commercial property policy. Both policies have to be checked so that no gap in cover or unnecessary duplication arises. Limits for this equipment differ between insurers – find out the actual sum.

Courtesy car

Courtesy car terms become important when a repair may drag on. Check:

  • Which event entitles you to a courtesy car (a KASKO claim, a technical breakdown)
  • From what point the days are counted and whether waiting for parts is included
  • The maximum number of days and the daily or overall limit
  • The vehicle class you need; an electric courtesy car is only a matter of customer preference, not a required sign of a good policy
  • Whether taxi or shared transport costs can be reimbursed instead of a courtesy car

Vehicle value and total loss

In a total loss or theft scenario, the value terms are decisive:

  • Market value on the day of the accident – the default principle; you need to understand how the insurer determines it.
  • New value cover – for new cars, the first few years may provide for a claim payment at the value of a new car; check the time limit and the conditions.
  • Lease value or additional value cover – if the market value is lower than the outstanding lease balance, without such cover the difference is left with you. The name used in the quote may differ.
  • Separate deductibles for theft and total loss – these tend to be higher (often a percentage of the value).

Frequently asked questions

Does a Tesla have to be repaired only at a Tesla service centre?

No. Some repairs may require a Tesla Service Center or a Tesla-approved body repair shop (Tesla Approved Body Shop), but many types of damage can be repaired by a repairer agreed with the insurer.

Does the Tesla warranty cover recovery?

Assistance must be requested through the Tesla app. The type of assistance available, the destination and any costs depend on the Tesla assistance and warranty terms in force in the region concerned, so before the car is moved you must obtain confirmation of the destination and of who pays the cost. A warranty defect in itself is not a KASKO event.

Is there a EUR 0 deductible on the panoramic roof glass?

That depends on the individual policy. A panoramic roof may carry a EUR 0 glass deductible, a separate glazing deductible, the standard damage deductible or some other condition. Also check whether a reduced deductible applies only at a particular partner repairer.

Does KASKO cover the Wall Connector?

Depending on the insurance programme, a Tesla Wall Connector may be a matter for an electric car KASKO extension or for a building, home or commercial property policy.

Methodology and sources

This article is based on the official Tesla documentation and on broker practice in comparing KASKO quotes; the terms of Latvian insurers differ and must always be checked in the current policy wording of each insurer – individual insurers are deliberately neither recommended nor rated here.
