An extended warranty covers unexpected mechanical, electrical and electronic failures of a used car – the kind of damage KASKO (comprehensive motor own-damage cover) usually does not pay for, because there is no external cause. GAP FLEX is a separate, cheaper cover for cars without KASKO: it fixes the value of the car on the day the policy is bought and pays out in defined situations – if the car is written off in an accident caused by another driver, is stolen, catches fire or collides with a wild animal.
- Car age – up to 10 years
- Mileage – up to 250,000 km
- Also available for cars imported from the USA

What an extended warranty covers
Once the manufacturer's warranty has expired, an engine, gearbox or electronics repair can cost several thousand euros. KASKO covers sudden external events such as a collision, theft or a natural peril, but not a technical failure without an external cause. MTPL (OCTA) covers your liability towards others, not your own car. An extended warranty fills exactly this gap: it pays for the repair when the car suffers an unexpected mechanical, electrical or electronic failure.
Mango Insurance offers several levels of cover that differ in the range of parts covered:
- DELUXE – the widest plan. It covers all mechanical and electronic parts of the car that are not expressly excluded in the policy wording. The quote we prepared in 2026 for a plug-in hybrid also included the multimedia system and the hybrid drive (PHEV) components.
- e-DELUXE – the plan for electric cars.
According to a Mango Insurance representative (2025), the most common problems in insured cars are various sensors, engine and gearbox components, clutch parts, and fuel and coolant pumps.
Warranty claims: what real cases show
In June 2026 Mango Insurance described to its partners three recently handled claims. They show what the warranty pays for – and where its limit lies.
| Failure | What happened | Repair invoice | Claim payment | Uncovered amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | An unusual noise appeared while driving. The workshop found worn plain bearings on cylinders 3 and 4, a damaged cylinder block and crankshaft, a damaged turbocharger and a DPF filter clogged with oil. The engine was replaced. | EUR 4,115.40 | EUR 2,000 – the per-claim limit | EUR 2,115.40 |
| Cooling system | Mechanical failure of the water pump and of the alternator's overrunning pulley; the leaking coolant damaged the belt and the battery stopped charging. Accepted as an insured event. | EUR 4,674.38 | EUR 4,000 – the per-claim limit | EUR 674.38 |
In both cases the warranty worked, but EUR 2,115.40 and EUR 674.38 remained uncovered because the per-claim limit chosen in the policy was lower than the repair invoice. Mango named this trend to its partners directly: for expensive claims, the limit set in the policy was not enough.
The third case – a turbocharger: the car lost power because a part of the turbine's pressure-control valve was damaged. As that part is not supplied separately, the whole turbocharger was replaced. Mango did not state the amounts in this case.
Conclusion: choose the per-claim limit according to what the most expensive possible repair of your particular model could cost – engine, gearbox, turbocharger – not according to the lowest premium.
How to choose the limit, the term and the deductible
The price and the real value of the warranty depend on several parameters. In the Mango Insurance DELUXE quote they are as follows:
- Term – 12, 24 or 36 months. The shorter the term, the higher the rate.
- Per-claim limit – the maximum amount for a single failure. It can be changed, and changing it changes the premium.
- Aggregate claims limit – the maximum amount over the whole policy period.
- Annual mileage limit – this can also be changed and affects the premium. State your real mileage, not an optimistic one.
- Deductible – for example EUR 0, 200 or 400. The lower the deductible, the higher the premium.
- Towing – in our 2026 DELUXE quote up to EUR 200 per event.
- Payments – the premium can be split into instalments; in our quote there were six monthly payments.
If the car belongs to a VAT-registered business, note that the workshop invoices are issued to the client and the Mango claim payment is calculated without the recoverable VAT.
GAP FLEX: cover for cars without KASKO
Mango introduced GAP FLEX in mid-2025, and it is particularly popular with owners of used cars. Mango describes it as a narrower but considerably cheaper alternative to KASKO. GAP FLEX does not pay for repairs at actual cost – it pays a defined amount in specific situations:
- Total loss in an accident caused by another driver – the at-fault driver's MTPL pays the market value of the car on the day of the accident, and GAP FLEX covers the difference up to the sum insured fixed on the day the policy was bought.
- Theft – 50% of the sum insured.
- Collision with a wild animal – 15% of the sum insured, regardless of the extent of the damage.
- Fire – 15% of the sum insured.
The sum insured stays fixed for the whole policy term, and GAP FLEX can be bought for several years – for example, for 5 years. This matters because MTPL always pays the market value of the car on the day of the accident, and that value usually falls every year.
GAP FLEX suits you if KASKO is too expensive or no longer pays off but you do not want to drive with no protection at all, and if you often drive on roads where wild animals tend to run out.
GAP FLEX claim examples
Four cases that Mango Insurance described to its partners in March and June 2026:
| Case | Purchase price of the car | GAP FLEX policy | At-fault driver's MTPL | GAP FLEX payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Megane – written off after an accident caused by another driver | EUR 4,999 | EUR 151 / 5 years | EUR 3,980 – market value on the day of the accident | EUR 1,019 difference up to the purchase price + EUR 1,000 for the inconvenience |
| Audi A4 – collision with a lorry, the lorry driver at fault | EUR 15,899 | EUR 250 / 2 years | full repair at a workshop | EUR 2,384.85 – 15% of the car's value for the loss in value |
| Volvo XC40 – accident, the client recognised as the injured party | EUR 18,899 | EUR 289 / 3 years | EUR 2,374.98 based on the repair estimate | EUR 2,834.85 |
| Kia Sportage – collision with a roe deer, no KASKO | EUR 10,699 | EUR 161 / 2 years | none – there was no at-fault driver | EUR 1,604.85 – a fixed 15% |
The figures show the logic of GAP FLEX: the premium is a small fraction of the car's value, while the payment is a fixed percentage or the difference up to the fixed amount. In the Kia case, without GAP FLEX the collision with a roe deer would not have been compensated at all: there was no KASKO, and MTPL does not cover such an event. In the Audi and Volvo cases GAP FLEX paid 15% of the car's value on top of what the at-fault driver's MTPL paid.
What to check before you buy
- Whether the car meets the conditions: age up to 10 years and mileage up to 250,000 km.
- Which plan is being offered and what the policy wording excludes.
- Whether the per-claim limit covers the most expensive possible repair – engine, gearbox, turbocharger.
- The aggregate claims limit, the term, and an annual mileage limit you will actually stay within.
- The deductible and the towing limit per event.
- If you buy the warranty later rather than together with the car: whether a diagnostic check is required. In our practice Mango asked for a computer diagnostic report showing all active and historical faults with their codes.
- If the car belongs to a VAT-registered business: the claim payment is calculated without the recoverable VAT.
- For GAP FLEX: the sum insured, the term and the product information document – in which situations it pays the fixed percentage and in which it pays the difference.
Who Mango Insurance is
SIA Mango Insurance (reg. No. 40203490873) distributes insurance in Latvia that is underwritten by Fortegra Belgium Insurance Company NV – an insurer licensed in Belgium and part of the US Fortegra group. According to Mango's data (June 2026), in more than three years of operation it has concluded more than 14,500 extended warranty policies, settled more than 1,500 claims and paid clients more than EUR 2.0 million in repair compensation.
The Mango warranty is usually offered by car dealers together with the car, but it can also be arranged through a broker – including for a car bought earlier. I help choose the plan and the limits, arrange the policy and, if a failure occurs, help with the claim documents. SIA EURORISK works with Mango Insurance; for arranging a policy the broker receives a commission that is included in the premium – there is no additional charge for the client.
Frequently asked questions
Can the extended warranty be bought for a car imported from the USA?
Yes. Mango Insurance states that the warranty also applies to cars imported from the USA, provided the car is no more than 10 years old and its mileage does not exceed 250,000 km.
Can I buy the warranty if I already own the car?
Yes, it can also be arranged later, not only when buying the car. A diagnostic check may then be required – in our case Mango asked for a computer diagnostic report with all active and historical faults and their codes.
Does GAP FLEX replace KASKO?
No. KASKO pays for the actual damage, even if you caused the accident yourself. GAP FLEX pays defined amounts only in specific situations – for example, if the car is written off in an accident caused by another driver, is stolen, catches fire or collides with a wild animal. It is an inexpensive addition to MTPL, not a full alternative to KASKO.
How much does GAP FLEX cost?
The price depends on the particular car and the policy term. In the claim cases Mango has described, the GAP FLEX policy cost from EUR 151 (for 5 years) to EUR 289 (for 3 years). I prepare an extended warranty price calculation for a specific car on request.
Who is the insurer?
Fortegra Belgium Insurance Company NV. In Latvia the products are distributed by SIA Mango Insurance; I arrange the policies as a broker of SIA EURORISK.
